After the recent high winds across Central Ohio, a lot of homeowners are asking:
“Did my home take damage—even if nothing looks obviously wrong?”

That’s a smart question—because wind damage is often subtle at first. What looks like a minor issue today can turn into a leak, rot, or system failure in the coming weeks.

Here’s how to do a quick but meaningful inspection of your home without getting on a ladder.

Start With a Slow Walkaround (This Tells You More Than You Think)
Before looking up, start at ground level.
Windstorms usually leave behind clues—even when the damage itself isn’t immediately visible.

What to look for—and what it means:

• Shingles in the yard → almost always means your roof has exposed areas
• Small pieces of siding or trim → panels may be loose or partially detached
• Bent or pulled gutters → strong indicator wind got under roof edges
• Branches against the house → possible impact damage you haven’t noticed yet
  
  

If you see debris, don’t assume it’s minor—it usually points to something larger above.
 
Check Your Roof (Without Climbing Up There)
You don’t need to get on the roof to spot problems—you just need to know what to look for.

Scan for:

• Missing shingles
  These create direct entry points for water. Even one missing shingle can lead to a leak.
• Lifted or “creased” shingles
  High winds can bend shingles upward. They may still be there, but they’ve lost their seal and will likely fail soon.
• Uneven or patchy appearance
  Areas that look darker or different often indicate damage or wear from wind stress.

Siding, Windows & Doors: Where Water Gets In
Wind doesn’t just hit the top of your home—it pressurizes the sides, which is where a lot of hidden problems start.

Look closely for:

• Cracks or dents in siding
  Even small impact damage can open the door for moisture.
• Loose or “rattling” panels
  Wind can break the fasteners holding siding in place. It may still look fine—but it’s no longer secure.
• Gaps at corners, trim, or seams
  These are the exact spots where water intrusion begins.
• Window or door frame separation

Garage Door: One of the Most Overlooked Problem Areas
This is where a lot of homeowners miss issues—and where you can really differentiate yourself.
Garage doors are large, flexible systems. Wind pressure can affect them without leaving obvious visual damage.

Pay attention to:

• The bottom seal
  If it’s no longer tight to the ground, the door may have shifted slightly.
• Changes in operation
  Slower movement, hesitation, or reversing can indicate track or opener strain.
• New vibration or noise
  This often means the system is no longer aligned properly.
• Tracks that look slightly off
